Toto was formed in the year 1976 by guitarists Jeff Porcaro, David Paich (who at the time were also well-known studio musicians with Boz Scaggs) and singer/bassist Bobby Kimball. Their name is derived from the Latin word that means "all encompassing," the group was determined to explore every musical style.
In 1981, Toto's third album Turn Back was a flop however, they bounce back with their fourth release Isolation with two hits, including the title track and Roseanna. The album and tour make them a household name throughout the world.
After a brief break, Toto returns with the album Fahrenheit. It marks a step away from the ballads that were featured on previous albums and also includes some heavy rock. The album was their first to be certified platinum in North America.
During the recording process of the fifth album, the group loses its manager and faces financial difficulties. They decide to change their name and create a new album with the new producer. The lead vocalist Fergie Frederiksen leaves the band and is replaced by Joseph Williams, son of legendary film composer John Williams and 1950s actress Barbara Ruick. Joseph is more natural as a frontman than Frederiksen and gives the band a needed boost.
The band released Mindfields in 1999 and goes on a massive worldwide tour. After a few months in Europe they travel to Japan where the shows are sold out. After a short break, Toto resumes recording and continues to record their first live album, Absolutely Live in 1993 which includes the cover of Weezer's track Hash Pipe in response to the band's cover of their hit Africa on a recent tour. Toto's touring group includes drummer Lenny Castro and bassist Shannon Forrest and keyboardist Shem Von Schroeck.

However, Toto reunited in 2010 to benefit the ALS Foundation. This was the first time that all of the original Toto members had been performing together for over 31 years. In addition to the original members, keyboardist Greg Tambu filled in for Paich and bassist David Hungate filled in for Shem Von Schroeck.
